The New Conversation Starter - Have You Noticed?

This is just an observation [one I’m also guilty of on occasion]…but have you noticed lately, that people ask you questions, which you know came directly from observing a Facebook News Feed posting you did?

Something like, “Hey, did you see XYZ [person] at the XYZ [web series] premiere party?…”, because they obviously saw the photo’s you posted from the Red Carpet. They know you were there. Or, “Hope you had a good time in Napa last week…”, after you’ve written about the great wineries you visited.

Now, what’s weird about this to me, is that neither party prefaces this with, “I was on Facebook, and saw that you…whatever.” People just dive in, and ask about it, whatever it is, as if they had already known about whatever the item was.

So, does that change the way conversations will happen going forward? How they start, how they progress?

From what I’ve observed here…I think that has already taken place. What do you think?

“Well…it depends on what the word ‘Social’ means…”

Not your usual title to a Blog post, true. And yes, it has direct allusions to a famous utterance from a certain ex-US Prez, as well.

But, as I am looking more & more at the ways that Social Media are being used [at least among the various crowds in Media, Wine & Music that I am exposed to], it is pretty clear, to me anyway, that ‘Social’ is really coming to have TWO different meanings. And uses.

And all of that is fine…as long as we realize it as so…and call it for what it is.

There is a distinct set of people who are using Social Media pretty much only for Branding, or “image” purposes. So, with them, you’ll get a lot of cheery, or very focused sets of topics on which they offer comment or contribute to. It’s nearly clinical, which again, is fine.

On the other hand, are people that ARE truly being “social” with their online dialogue; offering comments on various points of view, even [gasp!] ranting on occasion. Taking chances, reaching out, engaging you or I, being…social.

Now, there is a fine line between a rant, a whiner and a truly negative person. But the ones always playing it safe, never offering any insight into who they are as a person, apparently wary of what any Search engine may find on them 9 years from now? Dry, boring, one-dimensional. Starts getting old after a while.

So yes, those folks have a “social” element…but are not truly being “social” in what is probably the more real sense of the word. And while I value the connection/interaction that I have online with many of those people, many of them really are starting to appear…BORING.

And that is, in my book, truly UN-social. No matter what way you mean the word.

Has it All Come Down to ‘Lists’?

I have been a David Letterman fan for as long as I can remember. And everyone knows by now, that his ’Top 10 List’ every night is an icon…even if Jay inexplicably gets more viewers.

Not to digress. Because while I think list’s CAN be good for certain things…and be done on occasion…the whole ‘List’ idea has gotten way out of control, in nearly every discussion that I see on Social Media.

Now there may be reasons for this, yes: Social Media has so many different elements to it, writing it this way makes your article/blog appear authoritative,  or maybe bite-size chunks of this new huge area makes it more digestible. But, still. Is anyone ever going to really internalize a List like this? Especially a new one seemingly every day? Not likely.

I am not proposing an answer here; I guess at the moment, I just plain have ‘List Fatigue’…and so my ’Top 15 Ways to Avoid Lists When Talking About Social Media’ is not going to cut it.
